Brooches, rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and cufflinks are examples of jewelry worn for personal ornamentation. Jewelry can be worn on the body or on the clothing. The term usually refers to long-lasting ornamentation, such as flowers. Metals such as gold, which is typically paired with gemstones, have been the standard material for jewelry for many centuries, but other materials such as shells and other plant materials can also be utilized. Jewelry has a long history reaching back thousands of years, and the word itself comes from the root-word jewel, which was anglicized from the Old French "jouel," and then from the Latin word "jocale," which means "plaything."

There are many famous jewelry companies with whom you may be familiar, including Tiffany & Co., David Yurman, Bvlgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Chopard, David Webb, Martin Katz, and more. Harry Winston is known as the King of Diamonds, and a Harry Winston Engagement Ring and Harry Winston watches are coveted items. Cartier is known for a wide range of products, including watches, sunglasses, and more, in addition to their famous jewelry.  Just a few of their beloved products include a Cartier Bracelet, Cartier Buffs, and Cartier Necklace. Chopard is known for its "Happy Diamonds," and while their domination on the red carpet may make them appear daunting, they have made a concerted effort in recent years to expand their products to include simpler bangles and earrings. Amongst other stunning offerings, a Chopard Ring or Chopard Watch always stand out.

Jewelry can include a large variety of finishes and adornments.  Three of the most popular stones in jewelry are as follows:

  • Diamonds - Can you believe that the majority of natural diamonds are between 1 and 3.5 billion years old?!? Because of the material's outstanding physical properties, diamonds have been utilized for a variety of applications. It is the hardest and least compressible substance known, with the highest heat conductivity and sound velocity. It exhibits low adhesion and friction, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and strong optical dispersion. Its optical transparency ranges from the far infrared to the deep ultraviolet. In recent years, their use has even spread to diamond nails and diamond teeth, a significant refinement from a raw diamond or their traditional use in rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Some rarer forms of the gem include a saffron diamond or amber diamond.

  • Sapphire - Sapphire is a precious gemstone made up of aluminum oxide with trace amounts of other elements like iron, titanium, chromium, vanadium, and magnesium. Natural "fancy" sapphires come in a variety of colors, including yellow, purple, orange, and green. Sapphires are also employed in non-ornamental applications such as high-durability windows, wristwatch crystals and movement bearings, infrared optical components, and ultra-thin electronic wafers due to its unique makeup and chemical capabilities. You may have never seen a raw sapphire, let alone the rarer varieties, including a orange sapphire, white sapphire, or peach sapphire, but you’ve likely seen it in many pieces of jewelry, in addition to in home and commercial uses. Sapphire earrings really stand out in a crowded room, and white sapphire rings can sparkle like a diamond.

  • Emerald - Color, clarity, cut, and carat weight are the four main factors used to grade emeralds, as well as other colored gemstones. To be regarded a top gemstone, an emerald must have not just a pure verdant green hue as mentioned below, but also a high degree of transparency. The traditional birthstone for the month of May, as well as the traditional gemstone for the astrological sign of Cancer, is emerald. As such, emerald green is a well known color, and may be seen many places, including rarely as a raw emerald, but more commonly in a men’s emerald ring, emerald bracelet, or even in an emerald greed dress.
